President Trump has unveiled a new immigration proposal, aiming to protect agricultural workers who have been living in the country illegally. The plan involves giving farmers and other industry leaders the authority to vouch for the immigrants’ good conduct and loyalty, thus preventing their deportation.
Trump announced this initiative at an event at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Thursday night, highlighting the importance of preserving the nation’s agricultural output while ensuring the well-being of the workers involved. The president emphasized that farmers will be held accountable if they fail to vouch for trustworthy individuals, stating “If the farmers don’t do a good job, we’ll throw them the hell out of the country. We’ll let the illegals stay and we’ll throw the farmers the hell out.”
According to Trump, this plan is intended to prioritize the interests of both American workers and foreign nationals alike. He stressed that the farming industry relies heavily on migrant labor, citing cases where immigrants have been working in the sector for 15 years before being suddenly deported.
Critics have already responded to the proposal, with California Republican state Sen. Melissa Melendez expressing her disapproval. “So if I’m to understand this correctly, we should look the other way regarding illegal immigration as long as it’s within construction, hotel, or restaurant industries?” she questioned in a statement.
Despite the backlash, Trump’s plan has been met with optimism by some, including Iowa State Fair attendees who attended his speech.
