Nicole Scherzinger has opened up about her experience working with Liam Payne on the new Netflix series “Building the Band”.
The show, which premieres today (July 9), follows a unique format where contestants form their own groups without any record execs or labels telling them what they should be doing or how they should look. Scherzinger serves as a mentor and judge alongside Kelly Rowland and AJ McLean.
Scherzinger emphasizes the importance of authenticity and inclusivity in music, stating that the industry has changed significantly since her time with the Pussycat Dolls, one of the most commercially successful girl groups of all time. She expresses admiration for artists like Lizzo, Demi Lovato, Billie Eilish, who have challenged traditional norms.
“It’s not what you would think,” Scherzinger explains, highlighting the difference between old and new ways of approaching music. “That doesn’t work anymore. That’s the old formula.”
Scherzinger also shares her fond memories working with Liam Payne on “Building the Band”, stating that it was his “happy place”. She notes that Payne’s presence was essential in bringing out the best in others, emphasizing the importance of finding strengths and empowering them.
The new judge praises Payne’s dedication to mentoring contestants on the show, praising how he inspired others. She concludes by saying that Payne would have loved this experience and it made him happy.
