Belkin Kills Wemo Smart Home Support
In a sudden move, Belkin has announced that it will be ending support for the majority of its Wemo smart home devices at the end of January next year. This decision will render most devices useless, as they will no longer have access to their smart features and remote control capabilities.
According to the company, any devices still under warranty after the cut-off date will be eligible for partial refunds. However, those who are outside of this window will be left with little choice but to responsibly recycle them at an e-waste facility.
This move marks another instance where a brand has effectively rendered its smart home devices useless once their functionality is switched off. While not entirely unexpected, given Belkin’s decision to pause Wemo’s future development in 2023, the impact will be felt by many consumers who have come to rely on these devices for their daily routines.
The only exception appears to be a few select products that are compatible with Apple HomeKit, which will still be supported.
