TikTok owner ByteDance is reportedly building its own mixed reality goggles
ByteDance, the parent company of popular social media platform TikTok, is allegedly working on a new project – mixed reality goggles. According to The Information, these innovative glasses will allow users to layer digital objects onto their real-world surroundings, directly competing with Meta’s upcoming mixed reality offerings.
The development of this product is being handled by ByteDance’s virtual reality startup, Pico. In the past, Pico has attempted to match Meta’s Quest headsets in terms of features, but these new goggles represent a distinct departure from previous approaches. Instead of a bulky headset, users can expect a compact and lightweight device roughly the size of Bigscreen Beyond VR headset, weighing around 0.28 pounds.
To achieve this remarkable lightness, Pico will be using a different approach than its competitors. The majority of the computing work will be shifted to a puck connected to the goggles via wire. This is similar to Meta’s Orion AR glasses prototype unveiled in November 2024, which also utilized a wireless puck for weight-saving purposes.
Additionally, The Information suggests that Pico is working on specialized chips designed specifically for these goggles. These chips will be used to process data from sensors and minimize lag or latency between the user’s movements and what they see in AR.
