xAI starts offering Grok to US government agencies
Just days after apologizing for its recent hard turn toward antisemitism, xAI has announced a suite of AI products designed specifically for government use. The company’s new initiative, dubbed “Grok for Government,” brings together its latest commercial offerings, including Grok 4 and Deep Search, with customized features tailored to the unique needs of federal, state, and local agencies.
As part of this effort, xAI will design bespoke AI models for national security and research customers, as well as develop specialized applications for use in healthcare, fundamental science, and national defense. The company also promises to create models that can be safely used in classified and restricted environments.
In a tweet, xAI announced the new partnerships with US government agencies, specifically highlighting a contract with the Department of Defense and availability through the General Services Administration schedule. This means that every federal department, agency, or office will have access to its AI models for potential purchase.
This move comes as a surprise, given recent tensions between President Trump and Elon Musk’s companies over their public feud. Despite these tensions, xAI has secured a contract with the Department of Defense, which may raise concerns about the potential impact on national security.
In related news, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Gov at the start of the year, also catering to government agencies. However, it remains to be seen whether this new development will have any significant implications or repercussions for the tech industry as a whole.
