98.5% of passwords fail this hacking test – how secure is yours?
In a shocking revelation, new research has exposed the alarming vulnerability of our password habits. According to the findings, an astonishing 98.5% of all passwords are weak and unfit for purpose, leaving users’ accounts at risk of being hacked.
The study analyzed 10 million compromised credentials from a list of over 1 billion hacked identities. The analysis revealed that only 1.5% of these credentials could be considered strong, while the remaining 98.5%, or approximately 9.85 million passwords, failed to meet even the minimum security standards.
The report’s findings have left experts in the cybersecurity community stunned, as it highlights the widespread incompetence and laxity in password creation among users. “Despite years of training, many users still choose weak, easily guessed combinations that cybercriminals can crack in seconds,” says Darren James, senior product manager at Specops.
