The American Rare Earths Mine You Haven’t Heard Of–Yet
As the world’s demand for rare earth elements continues to surge, a hidden gem has emerged in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Ramaco Resources, a publicly-traded company, has been quietly working on extracting these critical minerals from its coal reserves.
Ramaco CEO Randy Atkins emphasized that he doesn’t want any direct investment from the government, but does hope for some price support and to establish a national strategic reserve of rare earths and critical minerals. The Brook Mine, which broke ground last month, is expected to yield 2.5 million tons of coal over the next year.
Atkins stressed that Ramaco is not seeking a handout from the government, but rather wants to backstop demand by setting up something similar to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for these essential materials.
