Rivian adds Google Maps features to its navigation app
Rivian, the American EV manufacturer, is integrating Google Maps into its navigation app. This update aims to provide Rivian owners with more detailed information about their route, disruptions, and places they’re passing.
The new features include updated traffic data and rerouting options if a faster alternative becomes available during your journey. Additionally, drivers will have access to real-time road disruption reports from the Google Maps community. Furthermore, places of interest are now accessible directly on the map. Rivian has previously used Google Maps’ information for searching places; however, with this update, users can expect to see hours, ratings, and other essential details displayed on the screen.
The company is also extending its satellite image capabilities using Google Maps technology. This upgrade comes with a redesigned app that Rivian claims offers better “glanceability” and access to information.
It’s worth noting that Rivian has faced some setbacks in recent years. In February 2024, the company laid off 10% of its salaried workforce due to a $1.5 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 2023. Additionally, reports emerged in October of serious violations at the company’s factory, including an amputated finger and broken skull injuries, as well as symptoms like vomiting and dizziness following inadequate protective gear use during painting tasks. However, Rivian has disputed these claims.
Despite these challenges, Rivian continues to innovate by incorporating Google Maps features into its navigation app.
