Stevie Wonder has been performing since the age of 11 and achieving success with his first Hot 100 chart-topper “Fingertips” at just 13, but despite this remarkable track record, a longstanding conspiracy theory surrounding his vision has finally been put to rest by the music legend himself.
During an appearance in Cardiff, Wales for his Love, Light & Song U.K. tour, Stevie Wonder took the opportunity to address the widespread speculation that he is not actually blind, and the rumors have been circulating for years with some notable public figures sharing their own experiences of witnessing him “see” or recognize them in elevators.
In a poignant response that has left fans stunned, Wonder delivered an impassioned speech to the audience. He began by stating, “I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, ‘When did I want to let the world know this?’ But I wanted to say it right now.”
The 72-year-old music icon then addressed the rumors head-on, saying, “You know there have been rumors about me seeing and all that? But seriously, you know the truth. Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind.”
