Roger Ver Sues Spain to Avoid U.S. Extradition
Bitcoin evangelist and entrepreneur Roger Ver has filed a lawsuit in Madrid, seeking to block his extradition to the United States. Ver is currently being held by Spanish authorities pending a decision on whether or not he will be sent back to face criminal charges related to allegations of tax evasion and mail fraud.
According to court documents, U.S. prosecutors have charged Ver with failing to report and pay taxes on hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of Bitcoin sold in 2017 while still a U.S. citizen. The indictment alleges that Ver knowingly concealed ownership of crypto assets and misled tax authorities.
Ver has denied the charges, calling them “politically motivated” and claiming that they are intended to intimidate individuals who choose to exit the U.S. tax system. His legal team argues that the extradition request violates both Spanish law and international treaties.
The 45-year-old entrepreneur is seeking a court injunction to prevent his extradition to the United States, citing concerns over his due process rights and the potential for political persecution. This move comes as no surprise, given Ver’s long-standing criticism of U.S. regulators’ treatment of cryptocurrency innovation.
Ver’s legal battle in Spain could set an important precedent on how European courts handle crypto-related financial crimes with international reach.
