Polkadot Unveils Bold Vision for Proof-of-Personhood Identity System
In a groundbreaking announcement at the ongoing Web3 Summit 2025 in Berlin, Gavin Wood, founder and originator of the Solidity smart contract language, unveiled Polkadot’s vision to create a Proof-of-Personhood (PoP) identity system. This innovative solution aims to provide decentralized human verification directly on-chain, revolutionizing the way identities are managed in the digital world.
As part of the Individuality system, PoP will introduce two distinct identifiers: DIM1 and DIM2. While no specific launch date has been revealed yet, Wood emphasized that this ambitious project will be backed by a treasury proposal valued at $3 million. Furthermore, he announced that the protocol will make its debut alongside what he considers to be the “fairest airdrop ever.”
The Proof-of-Personhood concept is designed to address identity concerns that have long plagued the blockchain space, particularly as it relates to Web3 development in an era of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The increasing complexity in distinguishing between authentic and AI-generated content raises significant questions about verification and authentication.
Wood elaborated on the importance of this project by stating that Polkadot’s PoP concept is a premier Web3 primitive that will dramatically enhance sybil resistance, reduce security costs for the network, and effectively counter traditional verification methods such as CAPTCHAs, KYC, and other analogous solutions.
