Polkadot Unveils Bold Vision for Proof-of-Personhood Identity System
Gavin Wood, the founder and originator of Solidity smart contract language, has unveiled a bold vision at the ongoing Web3 Summit 2025 in Berlin. The project aims to enable decentralized human verification directly on-chain, solving the recurring problem of verification challenges in the rising AI age.
Wood presented his Proof-of-Personhood (PoP) concept model and discussed its potential impact on the public. This protocol will be released through Polkadot’s Individuality system, introducing two distinct identifiers: DIM1 and DIM2. The former represents Proof of Individuality, while the latter stands for Proof of Verified Individuality.
The launch date has not been disclosed yet, but Wood mentioned that the PoP release will be backed by a treasury proposal valued at $3 million. Additionally, it will come with what he considers the “fairest airdrop ever.”
Gavin Wood emphasized his ambition to utilize Polkadot’s PoP concept to address identity concerns often associated with blockchain usage in today’s AI-driven world. This is becoming increasingly necessary as artificial intelligence experiences steady growth, making it progressively difficult to distinguish between real and AI-generated data.
The Polkadot PoP system will also amplify sybil resistance and lower security costs for the network by addressing weaknesses of traditional verification systems such as CAPTCHAs, KYC, and similar methods.
