Microsoft Unleashes Brutal Blow to Gaming Community: Shutting Down Xbox Movies & TV Store
In a move that has left many gamers and entertainment enthusiasts reeling, Microsoft has announced the abrupt closure of its Xbox Movies & TV app. The service, which allowed users to rent or buy movies and TV shows directly through their Xbox consoles and Windows PCs, is no more.
According to an updated support page, Microsoft has “ended” the service, effectively cutting off new entertainment content purchases. However, users will still be able to access their previously purchased content within the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows devices.
In a shocking turn of events, Microsoft has also clarified that downloaded movies and shows will remain in users’ accounts, playable in their maximum supported resolution. This means that any purchased content will not be lost or deleted, but rather locked into the platform. The company has also confirmed that it does not offer refunds on previous purchases.
The Xbox Movies & TV app first emerged as Xbox Video in 2012, a direct response to Apple’s iTunes Store and Amazon’s various on-demand offerings. The service was later rebranded as Microsoft Movies & TV, attempting to position the ill-fated Xbox One as an all-encompassing multimedia hub. However, today’s drastic measure is a stark reminder that Microsoft has officially moved on from this era.
While some may see this closure as a blow to the gaming community, it’s essential to note that users will still be able to install other third-party video streaming and purchasing apps on both Xbox and Windows platforms, including Prime Video and Apple TV.
