Microsoft Unceremoniously Kills Off the Xbox Movies & TV Store
In a sudden and unexpected move, Microsoft has closed down its Xbox Movies & TV app, which allowed users to rent or buy movies and TV shows directly through their console or computer. The service was accessible on both Xbox and Windows devices via the Microsoft Store.
According to an updated support page by Microsoft, the company will no longer offer new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on its platforms. However, users can still access their previously purchased content within the Movies & TV app on Xbox or Windows devices.
It’s worth noting that downloaded movies and TV shows will remain in users’ accounts and continue to play at their maximum supported resolution. Nevertheless, there is no option to transfer purchased content to another service. As an alternative, Microsoft suggests signing up for Movies Anywhere, a service that allows users to register movies they have purchased on different storefronts and sync them across multiple platforms.
Interestingly, this move doesn’t affect third-party video streaming or purchasing apps available on both Xbox and Windows stores. This means that users can continue to install and use services like Prime Video and Apple TV without any disruptions.
Microsoft’s decision marks the end of an era for its ill-fated attempt to create a multimedia powerhouse with the Xbox One, which first launched in 2013. It seems that Microsoft has finally moved on from this concept, leaving users with limited options for streaming their favorite shows or movies directly through their console or computer.
