Natalie Bergman has finally found her place with the release of her new album “My Home Is Not in This World”. As a musician and producer, she had been struggling to find herself after giving birth to her first child. In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Natalie opens up about her creative journey.
The album marks a significant departure from her previous works, which were heavily focused on love and heartache inspired by the soul roots of her hometown of Chicago. Instead, “My Home Is Not in This World” celebrates motherhood and new life. The first song she wrote was actually an ode to her son Arthur, titled “Song For Arthur”. Natalie reveals that this song was a turning point for her as a musician and as a person.
“I couldn’t sing one note/How my aching heart had lost all its hope/until you give me a reason” – these lyrics echo the sentiment of finding oneself after going through a significant life change. The album’s title is a reflection of Natalie’s newfound sense of belonging, which she believes comes from embracing her dual roles as both an artist and a mother.
As a musician, Natalie is deeply aware of the importance of connecting with others during difficult times. She hopes that her music can be a beacon of hope for those struggling to find their place in the world. The album features upbeat tracks like “Gunslinger”, “Dance” and “I’ll Be Your Number One”, which Natalie believes are essential in providing solace during dark moments.
Natalie collaborated with her brother on the production, who also brought his saxophone skills to the table. Additionally, she included other instruments such as flutes, which was a nostalgic trip for him. The pair co-produced the album, partially recorded at their own studio outside of Chicago, surrounded by wildlife and old oak trees.
Natalie’s growth as an artist is undeniable, but it’s her openness about her life experiences that resonates deeply with fans worldwide.
