Google and OpenAI Chatbots Claim Gold at International Math Olympiad
In a groundbreaking achievement, AI models developed by Google’s DeepMind team and OpenAI have taken the top spot at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), outperforming human high school students in the prestigious competition. The remarkable feat sees these powerful artificial intelligence systems demonstrating their capacity for complex mathematical reasoning.
The two companies claimed victory after solving five out of six questions correctly, earning a total of 35 points out of a possible 42. This impressive performance is not limited to Google and OpenAI alone; a significant number of human participants – 67 students among the initial 630 – also achieved the gold medal.
What’s remarkable is that both companies used general-purpose AI models for this endeavor, rather than specialized AI designed specifically for mathematical tasks. In contrast, publicly available models were unable to achieve a respectable score, with even the best ones failing to score higher than 13 points.
