Supermassive Games, a renowned developer behind notable titles such as Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has made the difficult decision to reduce its workforce in response to the ongoing “challenging” state of the games industry. As a result, the studio is expecting to part ways with up to 36 employees.
In a statement published today, Supermassive acknowledged that this decision was not taken lightly and will undoubtedly be a trying time for those affected. The company has committed to providing full support to all individuals impacted by the layoffs.
Currently, Supermassive is actively working on two projects: Little Nightmares III and Directive 8020, which is the fifth installment in The Dark Pictures Anthology series. Despite these changes, the studio assures that the layoffs will have no impact on the development of Little Nightmares III, which remains scheduled for release on October 10.
However, it has been decided to delay the release of Directive 8020 until the first half of 2026. According to Supermassive, this revised timeline will enable them to deliver a superior gaming experience for their dedicated fan base. The original release date for Directive 8020 was set for October 2.
This news comes amidst a backdrop of significant job losses across the industry, with other notable studios such as King, Virtuos, and Playtonic also experiencing layoffs in recent weeks.
