Judge Approves Testimony on Tornado Cash Code Changes in Roman Storm Trial
A U.S. District Judge Katherine Failla has authorized testimony in the ongoing trial of Roman Storm regarding potential modifications to the code of Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixing service. This decision comes amid the second week of the Roman Storm trial.
As per the ruling, expert witness Philip Werlau from AnChain.AI will be able to explain the feasibility of implementing a “user registry smart contract” that could have tracked or limited the users of Tornado Cash. The defense had initially sought to block Werlau’s testimony on the grounds that the proposed code change has never been used in a public blockchain system. However, Judge Failla disagreed and ruled that as long as the witness can explain the concept if it is technologically feasible, he will be permitted to provide testimony.
The Roman Storm trial revolves around allegations of money laundering charges, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter, and conspiracy to violate U.S. sanctions. Prosecutors argue that Storm, in his capacity as a developer, could have taken measures to prevent the misuse of Tornado Cash, but instead chose not to act.
It is essential for Roman Storm’s defense team to counter these claims by presenting their side of the story during the trial. The trial will continue this week with additional law enforcement witnesses expected to take the stand.
The case against Roman Storm has been compared to other notable crypto-related trials, including those involving Sam Bankman-Fried, Karl Greenwood, and Nathaniel Chastain.
