Street lamps aren’t the main source of light pollution in cities, according to new research published in Nature Cities. This discovery challenges the assumption that streetlights are the primary culprit behind light pollution.
A recent study conducted by Dr. Christopher Kyba and his team at Ruhr University Bochum found that private windows, billboards, and other commercial lighting sources account for a significant portion of light pollution, not street lamps.
The researchers used an app called Nachtlichter to gather data on the number of light sources in urban areas. This app allowed them to identify the specific wavelengths of light that were decreased or absent during the lights-out period.
According to their findings, streetlamps actually make up a relatively small fraction of total lighting in cities.
In fact, it is often incorrectly assumed that street lamps are the main source of pollution.
