Fire on Virgin Airlines Flight Linked to Power Bank in Passenger’s Bag
On Monday, a fire broke out on a Virgin Airlines flight as it was preparing to land at its destination. According to reports, the blaze originated from a power bank that was being carried in a passenger’s bag.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time, with the plane still airborne and descending towards the runway when the smoke started filling the cabin. The crew swiftly responded by putting out the flames before the aircraft landed safely.
Although the cause of the fire is under investigation, it is believed that a portable lithium battery inside the bag sparked the blaze. This would not be an isolated incident, as previous in-flight fires have been attributed to similar devices.
The airline has since announced that it will review its policy on allowing passengers to bring power banks onto flights, amid growing concerns over the safety risks associated with these devices.
As reported by Gizmodo, the number of incidents involving lithium batteries and fire has skyrocketed by 388 percent in the past decade. This trend is attributed to an increase in the use of portable chargers and power banks among travelers.
