
‘Fibermaxxing’ Trends On TikTok. How Much Fiber Should You Be Getting?
As the latest trend to sweep social media platforms, “fibermaxxing” is encouraging people to increase their dietary fiber intake for various health benefits. But how much fiber should you be getting each day?
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average American adult consumes only 10-15 grams of fiber per day, which is significantly below the recommended levels. For example, the USDA recommends a daily amount of at least 28 grams for adults, assuming a diet with approximately 2,000 calories.
However, it’s essential to note that increasing your fiber intake doesn’t mean going overboard and exceeding these recommended amounts. A sudden surge in fiber consumption can lead to uncomfortable side effects such as bloating, gas, stomach cramps, and diarrhea or constipation, which may even require immediate medical attention if severe enough.
To incorporate more fiber into your diet, consider adding higher fiber foods like berries, oranges, avocados, chia seeds, whole grain breads, whole grain pasta, potatoes, oats, corn, mixed beans, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, broccoli, and pistachios.
