THE ORAL CIGARETTES ON ‘OVERNIGHT,’ THE OPENER OF ‘TOUGEN ANKI’ ANIME: ‘THE COOLEST KILLER TUNE WE’VE EVER RELEASED’
Japanese rock band THE ORAL CIGARETTES has dropped a brand-new track, “OVERNIGHT,” which serves as the opening theme for the anime series Tougen Anki: Legend of the Cursed Blood. In an exclusive interview with Billboard Japan, the four-piece group delves into the creation process behind this high-energy anthem and shares their aspirations to take their music global.
When asked about the song’s message, Takuya Yamanaka, THE ORAL CIGARETTES’ lead vocalist and guitarist, opened up about his personal experiences. “What’s important isn’t just pursuing your dreams, but how you take on those dreams and stay true to yourself,” he emphasized. This sentiment resonated deeply with the band members, particularly during their rise to fame following the success of their hit single “Kyouran Hey Kids!!”, which gained widespread popularity.
The drummer Masaya Nakanishi highlighted the importance of not compromising their artistic vision, stating, “As a drummer, I thought about how we’d be positioning the song in the future and realized that I wanted listeners to be able to focus on the singing. That’s why I figured it would be best not to go overboard with the drums.” This approach allowed for a cohesive listening experience.
Lead guitarist Shigenobu Suzuki shared his creative process, stating, “I’m good at making guitar lines with a harsh edge, and I tried out a few different tones for this song. Yuki Tsujimura helped with the arrangement.”
Bassist Akira Akirakani revealed the band’s plans to expand their global reach, expressing interest in playing shows in Latin America and the United States. “I totally trust the other members of the band now,” he said. “The four of us got together and wrote ‘Kyouran Hey Kids!!’ in the studio, but ‘OVERNIGHT’ was mainly written individually by Takuya and Shige.”
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for THE ORAL CIGARETTES, as they aim to connect with fans worldwide.
