Russia’s Colossal Earthquake May Have Ignited Multiple Volcanoes
A monumental earthquake has struck Russia’s far east Kamchatka Peninsula, and it seems to have had a dramatic impact on the surrounding volcanoes. According to reports, seven volcanoes in the area simultaneously erupted, an occurrence that hasn’t been seen in nearly 300 years.
The seismic event, which measured 8.8 in magnitude, appears to have triggered the eruptions, but experts are divided as to whether it was merely a coincidence or if the earthquake directly caused the activity. As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), large earthquakes can cause volcanic activity if the volcano is already close to erupting on its own.
