Vitalik Wants Sub-1-Hour Ethereum Withdrawals With ZK Tech
In a recent post, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has reiterated the need for sub-1-hour withdrawal times on Layer 2s (L2) using zero-knowledge (ZK) technology. According to him, the current delay of up to one week in L2-L1 withdrawals hampers user experience and poses a significant threat to the integrity of Ethereum’s decentralized vision.
Buterin emphasized that the current 7-day wait period for withdrawals is too long and compromises the system’s security. He warned that prolonged delays might push users toward insecure bridges, which could undermine Ethereum’s decentralization goals. To address these issues, Buterin suggested a hybrid approach combining ZK rollups, Optimistic (OP) rollups, and Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). This combination would balance speed, security, and production maturity.
Buterin highlighted that the proposed solution does not only improve user experience but also enhance Ethereum’s settlement layer capabilities. By integrating ZK-EVM proof systems and formal verification, Buterin expressed optimism that such a milestone could soon become a reality.
The co-founder urged developers and researchers to collaborate on creating fast and secure withdrawal solutions, stating, “Let’s work together to make this happen.”
