Kid Cudi Reflects on Near-Fatal Drug Overdose & Suicidal Thoughts: ‘I Was Not Planning to Live’
Kid Cudi has been open about his struggles with addiction and mental health in the past, but it seems a new level of candor will be on full display in his upcoming memoir. In an excerpt shared by GQ, the rapper gets real about a near-fatal drug overdose that left him feeling like he was “not planning to live.”
The excerpt reveals Cudi’s harrowing experience with a cocaine-fueled binge that pushed his body to its limits. At the time, Cudi was working on Man on the Moon II circa 2010, and it seems the pressure of creating music took a toll on his well-being.
“It felt like I had reached rock bottom,” he wrote in the memoir. “I had lost all sense of self-worth.”
The near-fatal overdose led to Cudi questioning whether life was even worth living, and as he put it, he “was not planning to live.” He recalls the incident, saying, “I was at peace with dying. After doing more coke than I ever had in my life I was losing all sense of what was real.”
He went on to describe how he would often be alone for hours listening to music while plotting his own demise. Cudi revealed that after finishing a session of recording music, he would research ways to end his life.
“After we’d finished a session, I’d be alone Googling exit bags,” he recalled. “I was thinking about a way I could actually do it.”
It seems the pain and suffering have fueled some of Cudi’s most iconic songs, with lyrics that resonate deeply with fans worldwide.
