Sony to Absorb Bungie into PlayStation, Ending ‘Independence’ Era
In a recent earnings call, Sony shed light on its plans for Bungie, the gaming giant it acquired for $3.6 billion in 2022. The news is not particularly shocking, given the company’s previous statements about retaining independence at the time of acquisition. However, the fact remains that this shift marks a significant change in the relationship between the two companies.
According to Sony CFO Lin Tao, Bungie will no longer be an independent entity but rather “become part of PlayStation Studios.” The move is seen as a response to various issues affecting the company and the performance of its projects.
As part of this restructuring process, it appears that the leadership at Bungie may also undergo significant changes. In recent years, there have been numerous reports of mass departures among senior executives, including Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, former Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn, and former Marathon director Chris Barrett, who was forced out after a misconduct investigation and is now suing Sony and Bungie over what he claims are still owed to him.
While the news may raise concerns about the future of popular franchises like Destiny and the upcoming Marathon, it’s difficult to say whether this move will ultimately prove beneficial or detrimental.
