Elon Musk Confirms Shutdown of Tesla Dojo, ‘an Evolutionary Dead End’
Elon Musk has confirmed the shutdown of Tesla’s AI training supercomputer project, Dojo. The news comes just weeks after reports emerged suggesting the company had put the project on hold.
In a post on X, the social media platform he owns, Musk stated that once it became clear all paths converged to AI6, he was forced to disband the team working on Dojo and make some tough personnel choices as Dojo 2 was now an evolutionary dead end. However, Musk did note that the concept of Dojo will live on in the form of a large number of AI6 systems-on-a-chip on a single board.
It is understood that Tesla had been investing heavily in its Dojo project since 2019, with Musk reiterating its importance to the company’s mission of achieving full self-driving and commercializing humanoid robots. The abrupt shutdown comes at a time when the company is facing significant challenges, including falling EV sales and brand damage following Musk’s forays into politics.
The shift in strategy marks a significant change in Tesla’s approach, with AI5 and AI6 chips now set to take center stage. These new chips are designed to power FSD, Tesla’s driver assistance system, as well as autonomous capabilities in humanoid robots.
