Gen-Z’s Social Media Addiction May Have Ironically Led to an Indie Cinema Revival
Social media is typically accused of killing the film industry, but it may be possible that it could also save it. During the pandemic, movie theaters struggled, as social distancing restrictions all but temporarily killed their business model. Many smaller, independent theaters went out of business permanently. However, since the pandemic has ebbed, the film industry has slowly recovered. Attendance in theaters is not exactly where it was prior to the pandemic, but attendance is significantly higher than it was during Covid, and continues to climb.
According to a report published by The Guardian, this resurgence may be attributed to the abundance of film access provided by the internet. While social media addiction often gets blamed for people’s inability to focus on longer-form content, a new era of young moviegoers seems to have discovered an unexpected love affair with cinema.
Ticket sales in Britain are not only up post-2020 but also at independent theaters, which show older movies and cult classics. The report suggests that this newfound interest in indie films could be linked to the fact that young people were raised on social media platforms that emphasize discovery over traditional entertainment sources like television.
