Sinéad O’Connor Biopic Chronicling Singer’s Early Years In the Works
A biopic about Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor is in the works, focusing on her early years. According to Variety, the film will be produced by ie: entertainment, the same company behind the 2022 documentary “Nothing Compares,” which tells the story of O’Connor’s life and career.
The upcoming movie will reportedly explore O’Connor’s journey through the music industry, shedding light on how she became a global superstar. The biopic will also delve into her experiences with abuse and scrutiny that accompanied her rise to fame.
O’Connor rose to prominence in 1987 with the release of her genre-agnostic debut album “The Lion and the Cobra,” which blended pop, goth rock, confessional folk, shoegaze, and ethereal chants. The singer’s bold and powerful vocals on songs like “Mandinka” and “I Want Your (Hands On Me)” made her an instant sensation, earning her a Grammy nomination for best female rock vocal performance.
Throughout her career, O’Connor was known for speaking out against injustice and the abuse of power, including criticizing the Catholic Church. Her actions led to intense scrutiny, as seen in her infamous 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live where she ripped up a picture of then-Pope John Paul II while stating “fight the real enemy.”
