OpenAI Launches a Sub $5 ChatGPT Plan in India
In a significant move, OpenAI has launched a new, more affordable subscription plan for its popular AI model, ChatGPT, in India. Dubbed ChatGPT GO, this new tier will be priced at ₹399 per month ($4.60), which is significantly lower than the previous Plus Plan costing ₹1,999 (about $23) per month.
The decision to launch a more budget-friendly plan comes as no surprise, given the massive popularity of ChatGPT in India. The app has seen over 29 million downloads from the country in just 90 days, with over 500 million weekly users worldwide, up from 400 million in March. Despite generating only $3.6 million in revenue during this period, OpenAI’s move is expected to increase subscription conversion rates.
In a tweet, Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, mentioned that the new plan will offer more access to its most popular features, including increased message limits, higher image generation capacity, and improved memory retention. Additionally, users will also have the option to pay through UPI (Unified Payment Interface), India’s payment framework.
Turley emphasized that the company is committed to making ChatGPT more affordable for Indian consumers, stating, “Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries.”
The launch of this new plan could see an increase in subscriptions, as AI enthusiasts and professionals alike take advantage of the lower pricing.
