Tezos’ Evolution: A Journey Through 18 Cities and Their Impact on Blockchain
Tezos has embarked on a remarkable journey, traversing across 18 cities to transform into a fast, secure, and adaptable blockchain network. This extraordinary tour has seen the introduction of groundbreaking innovations and upgrades, revolutionizing the blockchain landscape.
The Tezos odyssey began in Athens in May 2019, where the protocol witnessed its first significant upgrade. This milestone raised the gas limit per block and reduced validator roll size, laying the groundwork for on-chain governance capabilities.
As the journey progressed to Babylon in October 2019, the introduction of Emmy+ consensus algorithm smoothed network operations and boosted smart contract development. By March 2020, Carthage upgraded the network’s capacity and fairness by increasing gas limits per block and refining reward formulas.
In September 2020, Delphi streamlined gas and storage costs, making transactions more affordable for users.
The Tezos journey continued with a stop in Edo in February 2021, where privacy-preserving smart contracts were introduced alongside updates to the amendment process. Florence, which arrived in May 2021, doubled the maximum operation size, amplifying smart contract capacity.
Granada’s arrival in August 2021 brought Liquidity Baking, paving the way for decentralized liquidity.
In December 2021, Hangzhou laid the groundwork for advanced contracts. Ithaca, in April 2022, introduced Tenderbake consensus algorithm, significantly boosting scalability.
Tezos then stopped in Jakarta in June 2022 to experiment with enshrined rollups, ultimately providing a pathway for long-term scalability.
Kathmandu, which took place in September 2022, prepared the network for Smart Contract Optimistic Rollups, marking a significant leap forward in scalability.
Lima’s visit in December 2022 focused on enhancing validation and throughput, strengthening the blockchain’s foundation.
In March 2023, Mumbai halved block times and fully activated Smart Rollups on the mainnet. Nairobi’s arrival in June 2023 gave a significant boost to transaction and smart contract call performance.
Oxford brought Private Smart Rollups in February 2024, significantly enhancing privacy and security.
Paris joined the journey in June 2024 by reducing block times even further and introducing the Data-Availability Layer (DAL), which enhances throughput.
