Exclusive Awards
The much-anticipated MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have finally revealed the nominees for its two social categories – Best Group and Song of the Summer. This year’s nominees have drawn a lot of attention, with several groups vying to take home the coveted awards.
In the highly competitive Best Group category, it seems that there is an intense battle brewing among K-pop groups. Last year’s winner BLACKPINK has been nominated for this award once again, along with Seventeen and two other notable groups aespa and Stray Kids. Interestingly, these nominations indicate a strong presence of K-pop in the nomination list, which is not surprising given the genre’s immense global popularity.
Joining these well-established acts are KATSEYE, a newly formed group consisting of members from Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States. Their presence in this category highlights the ever-growing importance of global representation in music.
In contrast, some long-standing groups have been nominated for their work as well. Coldplay and Backstreet Boys, both past winners in this category, are now vying to repeat their past successes. Meanwhile, two regional Mexican bands, Fuerza Regida and Grupo Frontera, have also been recognized for their outstanding performances.
Lastly, The Marías from the United States has made it into the nominations list, which is a significant milestone for them as an indie pop band known for performing songs in both English and Spanish. They are named after its lead singer María Zardoya, who was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Atlanta.
On the other side of the fence lies the Song of the Summer category, which has garnered immense attention from fans worldwide. Not surprisingly, K-pop is still a major force to reckon with this year as well. HUNTR/X: EJAE, Audrey Nuna & REI AMI are being considered for their song “Golden” from the movie K-Pop Demon Hunters.
The remaining nominees in this category include Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, Alex Warren, Doja Cat, Post Malone, and Morgan Wallen.
