NYT Reporter Defends NYC Mayoral Hopeful Against Socialist Labels
A New York Times reporter has come to the defense of Democratic mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani, dismissing claims that he is a socialist. According to Jeffery C. Mays, it’s not accurate to label Mamdani as such.
Mamdani, a member of the national Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and its local NYC chapter, has been criticized by opponents for his alleged support of socialist policies. However, Mays contends that these assertions are unfounded.
In an article published on Saturday, Mays wrote that it’s not socialism that Mamdani is advocating for, but rather a belief in “treating people more equitably.” The reporter argued that this stance has been taken out of context by opponents, who aim to discredit the mayoral hopeful and hurt his chances in the polls.
Mamdani’s opponent, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., recently stated that New Yorkers are not socialists, implying that the candidate’s message would not resonate with voters.
