‘Call of Duty’ May Enlist for a Movie Adaptation
It seems like the world is about to get another blockbuster adaptation – and this time, it’s ‘Call of Duty’ joining the ranks. According to reports, Paramount is currently in negotiations with Activision Blizzard to secure the rights to adapt the popular gaming franchise into a movie.
As per sources, acquiring the IP is considered a “tough priority” for new Paramount head David Ellison, as it would further solidify the studio’s portfolio of major gaming properties. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time ‘Call of Duty’ has been attempted to be adapted – back in 2015, Activision Blizzard opened its own movie studio with the intention of creating a cinematic universe centered around the franchise.
Unfortunately, plans never materialized, and the publisher had to put the brakes on any further developments. However, now that it’s part of Xbox, the company seems open to embracing adaptations once more. This is in line with Xbox’s recent efforts, which include an ongoing Halo series and a Gears of War movie.
But what could a ‘Call of Duty’ film even look like? Given the franchise’s eclectic history, jumping between various real and fictional wars, from World War II to modern-day conflicts and beyond, there isn’t one obvious direction for the story to take. It seems likely that creators would be forced to get creative with their storytelling approach.
That being said, it might not be a bad idea to base any film adaptation on the popular Zombies or Warzone modes within the game. While these aspects may seem trivial compared to the mainline campaign, they have proven to be incredibly successful and engaging for players.
The potential movie adaptation has been met with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, but one thing is certain – ‘Call of Duty’ has a massive following that will likely tune in to any big-screen offering.
