Canon has made a significant move in the world of cinematography with the release of its new EOS C50 cinema camera. This compact device is capable of shooting not only widescreen video, but also vertical video simultaneously.
The camera boasts an impressive 32MP sensor, allowing for high-quality photo capture and internal RAW recording at 7K 60p. The inclusion of a full-frame CMOS sensor with dual ISO system in Canon Log 2 (C-Log 2) at ISO 800 and 6400, enables better low-light performance.
One of the most notable features of this camera is its ability to shoot vertical video, something that has become increasingly popular on social media platforms. The C50’s simultaneous recording function allows for seamless transition between formats. This means creators can output both widescreen and vertical video from a single capture, making it an incredibly versatile tool.
As well as these innovative features, the EOS C50 includes 12-bit Cinema RAW Light recording at up to 7K 60p and RAW HQ at 7K 30p, making it suitable for professional filmmakers. The camera also comes with high-bitrate XF-AVC S and XF-HEV C modes.
What’s more is that Canon has also introduced a feature called “simultaneous crop recording.” This allows creators to capture 4K video while outputting social media-friendly vertical video at the same time in 9:17, 9:16 or 1:1 formats. This is an invaluable tool for YouTube content creators who often need to adapt their content to suit different platforms.
The camera also includes professional features such as two full-size XLR audio inputs (via an optional top handle), a zoom rocker, waveform/peaking displays and C-Log3 support, along with a dedicated start-stop button. It also comes equipped with Canon’s exceptional Dual Pixel autofocus system and AI subject tracking that detects eyes, faces, heads, and bodies of people or animals.
Canon has made the camera available for pre-order at $3,899, with an expected release in Q4 2025.
