San Francisco now has two driverless car options
In a major development in the autonomous vehicle space, Amazon-owned Zoox has officially launched its services in San Francisco, marking the company’s entry into the market alongside Waymo.
Zoox began testing its autonomous technology in San Francisco since 2014 and has been working on developing its purpose-built robotaxi experience. The company is now offering this service through its “Explorers” program, which allows riders to travel for free around select neighborhoods, including SoMa and the Mission.
In a statement, Zoox CEO Aicha Evans emphasized the city’s innovation ecosystem, stating that it feels their autonomous vehicles can complement this environment. “We have seen incredible interest in Zoox in this market,” she added.
While Waymo has been operating in San Francisco for some time, the addition of Zoox brings a new level of competition to the autonomous vehicle space.
