The Australian recorded music industry’s annual night, the 2025 ARIA Awards, has come and gone, leaving some artists with a mix of emotions as the dust settles. While there were some unexpected surprises, there were also those who left empty-handed.
First and foremost, it was BARKAA who took home the award for best hip-hop/rap release with Big Tidda (Big Apples Music / Island Records Australia / Universal Music Australia), outdoing a formidable field that included Hilltop Hoods, Miss Kaninna, ONEFOUR and The Kid LAROI. The artist’s heartfelt acceptance speech was met with thunderous applause from the audience.
On the other hand, it was Hilltop Hoods who were expected to take home an award or two. Despite debuting at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart in August with Fall From The Light (Island Records Australia / Universal Music Australia), their sixth consecutive leader and seventh overall, they missed out on any ARIAs this year.
Amyl and The Sniffers were another act that left without a single award despite being nominated in six categories. Their punk rock outfit always keeps it real, and with best group and best album honors for Cartoon Darkness (Amyl and The Sniffers / Virgin Music Group), Amyl and The Sniffers dominated the ceremony.
Ninajirachi entered the ARIAs with a leading eight nominations, ultimately collecting three trophies, including the Michael Gudinski breakthrough artist award. Her fellow production masterminds Kevin Parker and Dom Dolla also collected two gongs each.
