The 2025 Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Awards have come and gone, leaving a trail of surprises and snubs in its wake. The ceremony, held at the historic Hordern Pavilion, witnessed Amyl and The Sniffers dominate with four wins, including album of the year for Cartoon Darkness.
In a shocking twist, BARKAA emerged victorious in the best hip-hop/rap release category with Big Tidda (Big Apples Music / Island Records Australia / Universal Music Australia), defying expectations by taking home the top prize over strong competitors like Hilltop Hoods and Miss Kaninna. The winning artist’s acceptance speech was genuine and heartfelt, expressing her gratitude to hip-hop for raising her and providing a platform to represent black women.
On the other hand, some acts did not receive recognition as they had hoped or deserved. Hilltop Hoods, known for their remarkable achievements, were unable to capitalize on their five nominations and instead left empty-handed. Despite having debuted at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart with Fall From The Light (Island Records Australia / Universal Music Australia), this milestone could not translate into a win.
Meanwhile, Ninajirachi entered the awards race with eight nods but did not go home disappointed, collecting three trophies, including the Michael Gudinski breakthrough artist award. Fellow production masterminds Kevin Parker and Dom Dolla also secured two honors apiece.
