Nima Momeni has been found guilty of the murder of Cash App founder Bob Lee. A jury took seven days to reach their verdict, and Momeni now faces 16 years to life in prison as a result.
The case drew national attention due to its shocking nature and the high-profile victim. In the aftermath of the crime, San Francisco’s elite seized on the murder as an opportunity to decry local crime, with many presuming that Lee had been killed by a low-level criminal. However, it was revealed that Momeni, another white-collar tech worker, was responsible for the killing.
Prosecutors claimed that the murder took place after a dispute between Lee and Momeni over Momeni’s sister, Khazar Momeni, whom Lee also knew. The night of the murder, Lee and Momeni spent time at Khazar’s apartment before leaving in Nima’s BMW around 2 AM. Prosecutors say that Momeni then drove Lee to an isolated spot and stabbed him three times, including once in the heart.
Momeni’s lawyers, on the other hand, presented a different story, claiming that Momeni acted in self-defense and that it was Lee who reacted poorly to a joke Momeni had made at his expense and pulled a knife on him. Momeni told the jury that a fight ensued between the two men for the knife, after which Lee left the vehicle.
The jury’s decision marks the end of a lengthy legal battle.
