Japan’s Honda and Nissan to Begin Merger Talks, Report Says
In a surprising move, Japanese automakers Honda Motor and Nissan Motor are reportedly entering into merger talks in an effort to strengthen their competitiveness against global rivals such as Tesla. According to Nikkei financial newspaper, the two companies are considering forming a single holding company and potentially bringing in Mitsubishi Motors under its umbrella.
While neither Honda nor Nissan has officially confirmed the report, both firms have acknowledged exploring potential collaborations with each other. In a statement, Nissan stated that it is “exploring various possibilities for future collaboration, leveraging each other’s strengths,” while Honda merely reiterated its earlier announcement to “explore strategic partnership on electric vehicles.”
The development comes as Japan’s automakers face significant pressure from Chinese competitors such as BYD, which have rapidly gained market share in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. The country’s once-dominant car industry has been struggling to adapt to the shift towards EVs, with a mere 1.7% of cars sold in Japan being electric vehicles in 2022.
Honda and Nissan’s proposed merger may be seen as an attempt to address these market changes by pooling their resources and expertise. The move could allow them to accelerate their transition towards the production of EVs, addressing consumer demand driven by growing concerns over climate change.
