The Department of Justice (DOJ) has requested that Dmitry Shevelenko, Chief Business Officer at Perplexity, testify in the ongoing Google antitrust case. This move comes as the government is seeking potential penalties against Google for alleged anti-competitive practices.
Perplexity, a $9 billion-valued AI search provider, has emerged as a significant player in the space, offering direct answers to complex queries. In response to this challenge, Google has developed its own AI-powered search tools, such as AI Overviews, which provide AI-generated answers above search results.
The DOJ’s request for Shevelenko’s testimony is part of its efforts to determine whether Google’s actions have stifled competition in the search space. The department wants to understand Perplexity’s relationship with “search access points,” including browsers like Google Chrome – locations where people typically go to conduct internet searches.
