Character.AI Discloses Brief User Data Exposure Incident
AI-based creative platform Character.AI has recently announced a brief incident involving the exposure of user data to others for approximately ten minutes. According to the company’s statement, the issue arose during an update to the featured Characters list on its homepage, which unintentionally made certain user account information publicly visible.
The exposed information may have included usernames, names, bios, Characters, homepages, personas, voices, or chats. However, it is essential to note that in most cases, only a single section of a user’s account was accessible to others. In instances where chat content was involved, the majority of affected users had only the first page of their conversation exposed.
Fortunately, the Character.AI team swiftly addressed the issue, limiting the exposure to less than 0.01% of its total user base and lasting around ten minutes in duration. This brief incident has led the company to revise its procedures for making changes to critical infrastructure.
To prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, Character.AI has introduced additional technical controls that ensure all updates meet their stringent quality standards. The company acknowledges the breach of user trust and expresses regret over the incident while affirming their dedication to ensuring the privacy and safety of user information.
As a result of this episode, Character.AI is taking comprehensive precautions to guarantee the security and integrity of its users’ data.
