Title: A Journey Around the World for a Purpose: Reflections on IEEE’s Global Impact
As I concluded my term as the President of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), I had the opportunity to travel across the globe, attending various events and meetings that showcased the organization’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community building.
My journey took me first to Singapore and Japan, where I attended the IEEE Singapore and Japan sections’ annual meeting. The experience allowed me to connect with fellow IEEE members and learn about their projects and initiatives in the region.
Next, I traveled to New Jersey, USA, where I participated in the IEEE Standards award event. It was an honor to present the Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award to Gary Hoffman, a well-deserved recognition for his outstanding contributions to the field.
From there, I flew to San Francisco to attend the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM), where I presented three technical field awards and engaged with attendees from the industry and academia. The event also included sessions on topics like magnetic random access memory (MRAM) and other emerging technologies.
After my time in San Francisco, I made my way to Italy, visiting Bologna and Milan for various IEEE-related activities. In Bologna, I gave a talk at the University of Bologna about the importance of sustainability efforts in data centers, highlighting IEEE’s initiatives in this area.
During my stay in Italy, I had the privilege of visiting Sasso Marconi, the estate where Guglielmo Marconi conducted his groundbreaking radio communication experiments. The experience was a powerful reminder of the pioneers who have shaped our field and the importance of continuing their legacy.
The highlight of my Italian trip was presenting an IEEE Technical Field Award at the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control in Milan. I also participated in social events with fellow attendees, including visits to the Alfa Romeo Museum and the National Museum of Science and Technology.
As I conclude this journey around the world, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities I had to connect with our global community. It is essential that we recognize the significant impact our organization has on people’s lives by providing a platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
Looking back on my experience as IEEE President, I am proud of what we have achieved in 2024. However, I also acknowledge that there is still much work to be done to address pressing issues like sustainability and diversity in the tech industry.
As I pass the torch to our new President, Kathleen Kramer, I am excited to continue contributing to the organization as IEEE Past President in 2025.
