Nigeria Arrests 792 Suspected Crypto Scammers
In a massive crackdown, Nigerian authorities have arrested 792 individuals suspected to be crypto scammers targeting victims in the United States, Europe, and Canada. The suspects allegedly used powerful computers and registered hundreds of SIM cards, with some even using foreign phone numbers.
According to reports, the scammers operated from a seven-story building that resembled a corporate headquarters of a financial establishment. It is alleged that they majored in investment and pig butchering scams. This development comes just days after U.S. authorities traced a scam victim’s funds to Nigeria.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) disclosed that the suspects had trained new recruits for two weeks, teaching them how to impersonate foreign individuals and convince victims to invest their money in fake crypto projects. It was also revealed that the main operators of the scam operation were controlled by foreigners who took over a victim immediately after they agreed to invest.
Out of the 792 arrested individuals, a significant number are non-Nigerian nationals. The EFCC reported that 148 were Chinese nationals and 40 were Filipinos. This shocking revelation has raised concerns about the extent of international cooperation in combating crypto-related crimes.
The arrests come at a time when scammers are increasingly inventing new tactics to evade detection. Just last week, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez shut down 40 NFT scam websites. Additionally, a blockchain security firm recently exposed scammers using fake Telegram verification bots to drain crypto wallets.
Experts warn that as financial and law enforcement agencies continuously stop scammers in their tracks, it’s likely malicious actors in the crypto scene will find new ways to reduce detection.
