The Supreme Court has announced that it will hear the challenge brought by ByteDance and TikTok against a law that would ban the social media platform in the United States unless it divests from Chinese ownership by January 19. This move comes after the companies filed an emergency motion on Monday, asking the court to temporarily block the law and allow it to assess the case.
The Supreme Court justices will hear arguments on January 10, but it is unclear when a decision will be made. The law in question would force TikTok to either sell its Chinese ownership or face a ban in the US, with the deadline looming just days away.
In a last-ditch effort to avoid the impending ban, ByteDance and TikTok have been exploring alternatives, including meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate on Monday. The CEO of TikTok, Shou Chew, reportedly met with Trump in an attempt to convince him to intervene on behalf of the platform.
It remains to be seen whether this meeting will yield any positive results for ByteDance and TikTok, but one thing is certain – the fate of the popular social media app hangs in the balance.
