Bitfinex Hacker Breaks Silence After Sentencing, Denies Wife’s Involvement
Ilya Lichtenstein, the mastermind behind the infamous 2016 Bitfinex hack, has finally broken his silence after being sentenced to five years in prison. The convicted hacker made a statement on X, refuting claims that his wife, Heather Morgan, was involved in the crime.
Lichtenstein took full responsibility for the incident, stating that he planned and executed the hack alone. He emphasized that his wife was not only unaware of the hacking but also did not know about it for years. The hacker’s statement comes after he received a five-year prison sentence for laundering Bitcoin and conspiring to launder funds.
In addition to distancing himself from his wife’s involvement, Lichtenstein acknowledged that his actions were wrong and were committed solely out of selfishness, as he “didn’t care about anyone else except myself.” The Bitfinex hack, which resulted in the theft of 119,754 Bitcoin worth millions at the time (now over $12 billion), is considered one of the largest cryptocurrency breaches in history.
Heather Morgan, also convicted for her role in laundering the stolen funds, was sentenced to 18 months in prison earlier this month. Despite her sentencing, Morgan has remained active on social media, sharing videos and updates with her followers.
