Craig Wright Faces 12-Month Suspended Sentence for Contempt in Satoshi Claims
Craig Wright has been sentenced to a 12-month suspended sentence for contempt of court after repeatedly claiming he was the creator of Bitcoin, despite being previously denied by a UK High Court. The Australian computer scientist did not appear in person at the London hearing, instead opting for a video conference due to “financial hardship.”
Wright’s actions have led to a contempt charge and a significant penalty, as well as further damage to his already tarnished reputation within the cryptocurrency community.
The ruling follows a March 2024 decision that conclusively rejected Wright’s claims of being Satoshi Nakamoto. Despite this, he has continued to assert his false claim of authorship, leading COPA (Crypto Open Patent Alliance) to bring contempt charges against him.
It is worth noting that Wright did not attend the hearing in person, citing financial hardship as the reason for not appearing in court. However, COPA’s legal counsel, Tristan Sherliker from Bird & Bird, pointed out the unusual nature of Wright’s actions. “It’s rare for someone to be ordered not to file legal proceedings and then do exactly that in the same court,” Sherliker stated.
The 12-month suspended sentence means Wright must comply with all court orders and cease claiming to be Satoshi Nakamoto for the next two years to avoid serving time behind bars. The judge’s ruling specifically prohibits him from pursuing any further court proceedings based on claims of being Bitcoin’s creator or owning related intellectual property.
It is unclear if Wright intends to appeal this decision, but his attorneys have not responded to media requests regarding the matter. Furthermore, Sherliker suggests that this outcome marks a definitive end to Wright’s baseless claims. “The whole world can see after that he was not Satoshi,” Sherliker emphasized.
Wright has consistently refused to disclose his physical location throughout the sentencing process and remains uncooperative, choosing instead to participate in virtual meetings and maintain his stance despite mounting legal consequences.
