Ukraine Hit By Massive Cyber Attack
In a shocking turn of events, Ukraine has been struck by its biggest ever cyber attack. The assault has targeted the country’s government databases, which are considered critically important infrastructure. The Ukrainian government has quickly launched an investigation into the incident and attributed the attack to Russian intelligence services.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, the Unified and State Registers, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, have been temporarily suspended due to the cyber attack. “As a result of a targeted attack, the work of the Unified and State Registers, which are in the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has been temporarily suspended,” she said.
It is clear that the goal of this cyber attack was to disrupt the operation of the government’s critical infrastructure. The Ukrainian authorities have taken immediate action to counter the attack and restore their systems. “Now, together with the team and specialists from other services, we are coordinating work on countering cyber attacks and restoring systems,” Stefanishyna stated.
The Ukrainian Security Service has launched a criminal investigation into the incident under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which covers violation of laws and customs of war. According to acting Head of the SSU cyber security department Volodymyr Karastelyov, it is believed that Russian intelligence services, specifically a GRU hacker group, are responsible for this attack.
It’s worth noting that Ukrainian government databases have been targeted by similar attacks in the past, particularly around the time of Russia’s invasion in February 2022. These cyber attacks often aim to disrupt essential services such as electricity and internet connectivity.
