A group of senators is urging President Joe Biden to extend the deadline for the upcoming TikTok ban, which is set to take effect on January 19. However, it remains unclear whether Biden has the legal authority to do so.
The proposed ban would require companies to remove TikTok from U.S. app stores or face financial penalties. Additionally, internet service providers cannot enable its distribution, effectively cutting off “the services that enable the TikTok platform to function, effectively shutting down TikTok in the United States,” according to the law.
Senators Edward Markey and Rand Paul have filed a petition with Biden asking him to delay the deadline until further review is conducted.
