As we welcome a new year, stargazers are in for a thrilling ride as the moon prepares to put on a spectacular show in the night sky. According to Jamie Carter, an award-winning reporter who covers the night sky, the moon will be involved in two total lunar eclipses, also known as ‘blood moons,’ and three supermoons, along with the biggest full moon since 2019.
2025 is shaping up to be an incredible year for lunar enthusiasts. The year will begin with a wolf-like spectacle on January 13th when it hosts its first blood moon event. This eclipse will be visible in North America and will mark the start of a fascinating sequence of celestial events.
The following month, February will bring the first supermoon, which is expected to be a rare sighting as it will be closer to Earth than any other full moon since 2019. The second blood moon is scheduled for September, where the moon will turn reddish due to the way that light interacts with Earth’s atmosphere during an eclipse.
However, it’s not just lunar eclipses and supermoons that are exciting – the sheer size of the full moon in December will be a sight to behold. As Carter notes, “Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.” It is essential for us all to get ready and take part in this astronomical experience.
Here are the dates to mark on your calendars:
